Best Places to go for Afternoon Tea – UK

Explore our Tea-rific Afternoon Tea Offering

We aim to be the best at everything we do, and the same applies to our famous afternoon tea offering which is available at many of our luxurious resorts across the UK.

Darwin Escapes can proudly claim to have some of the best places to go for afternoon tea in each of the locations where we provide it. This includes luxury countryside destinations in Yorkshire, Somerset, Oxfordshire and also the Isle of Wight.

Read on to learn more about each of our tea-rific resorts which may well turn out to the perfect places to go for afternoon tea near you…

A British Tradition Teeming in History…

A British Tradition

The ever so popular tradition of afternoon tea is believed to have been started in the early 19th century by the 7th Duchess of Bedford. Finding herself feeling ravenous and “having that sinking feeling” in the afternoon as the norm was to only have two meals a day, morning and late evening.

The Duchess took it upon herself to solve this issue by taking tea, sandwiches and cakes privately in the afternoon. She began to invite her friends, then brought the habit with her to London which in turn caught on with various other socialites, soon it became a popular custom that has carried on through to present day as a well-known British Tradition.

Milk before or after the tea… a much discussed debate amongst many, George Orwell’s even had his say suggesting “one should pour tea into the cup first” which we are leaning to agree with – we won’t stop you doing the latter at our Darwin Escapes resorts though.
