Things to do in Cowes
The town of Cowes in the Isle of Wight is of course famous for its annual Cowes Week which is an 8 day sailing regatta that takes place during the first week of August. It is one of the longest running UK sporting events and has been taking place on the island since 1826.
It has grown over the years to become one of the world’s largest sailing regattas featuring up to 1,000 boats and with 40 races taking place daily, making it a great sight for spectators. Watch the amateurs take on the Olympic Champions in a David vs. Goliath style battle.
A permanent feature which showcases the history of the town’s maritime activities is the Sir Max Aitken Museum, named after the former Conservative Politician and Military Serviceman. Aitken served as a RAF Wing Leader during the 2nd World War but during his retirement he took up offshore powerboat racing, overseeing the formatting of the now annual Cowes Torquay Offshore Powerboat Race. There are various historical artefacts at the museum to view, including many relating to Nelson Bonaparte.
Another great place to visit in Cowes is The Wight Military and Heritage Museum, which is located on the main road running from Cowes to Newport. This is a fantastic all weather attraction with an eclectic mix of artefacts from over the years ranging from tanks to military uniforms from the 1940s all the way through to today.
