Back in the 1960s Dr Kenneth Cooper created a programme of exercises to promote cardiovascular health and in 1968 published a book entitled “aerobics” outlining the exercise programmes and their benefits. Aerobics made a huge comeback in the 1980s as the fitness industry began to grow and fitness classes become mainstream. Variations such as Step Aerobics were later introduced in the late 1980s and since then aerobics has branched off into different forms including dance aerobics.
Aerobics Classes Formats
Aerobics classes can take several different forms, with High Impact Aerobics for example, utilising exercises such as jogging, jumps and hops to raise the heart rate and level of exercise to a greater intensity. In all formats the instructor will tend to remain at the front of the class as he or she demonstrates each exercise.
Dance Aerobics is a fun and vibrant form of aerobic exercise which is enjoyed by both men and women, experienced dancers and complete beginners to both dance and exercise classes. Dance techniques are interspersed with more traditional aerobics class exercises such as squats and jumps, usually followed with a cool down and a number of stretching exercises.
