The list of visitor attractions and sites of historic interest are incredibly diverse and seem to be never ending. Every time you visit the area you are sure to find some attraction which you have never been to before, with there being something to do for people of all interests and ages.

This medieval walled city is a fantastic place for simply strolling round of course thanks to its stunning Gothic architecture. As you traverse the city, you are sure to find countless traditional British pubs, high class eateries and mouth-watering local cafes which are begging to be tried out. This includes the highly rated Fudge Kitchen and Monk Bar Chocolatiers – a haven for those with a sweet tooth.

York Minster Cathedral

York Minster Catherdral at the centre of the nearby capital of the region

At the centre of the city lies the must see York Minster – the largest medieval cathedral in the whole of North Europe which can trace its history all the way back to the year 627. The current gothic structure which was built between 1220 and 1480 truly is a site to behold. It is now open to the public, with visitors given the opportunity to explore the Undercroft – a fascinating interactive exhibition in the chambers of the cathedral which will guide you through over 2,000 years of history.

A holiday in York of course wouldn’t be complete without learning a thing or two about the Vikings in the Jorvik Viking Centre which has recently undergone a multi-million pound redevelopment. Take the journey back to AD 960 and learn about Eric Bloodaxe who was the last Viking King in Jorvik in their newest exhibition ‘the Return of the Vikings’.

This is of course just a small selection of the many visitor attractions on offer in York which also includes The National Railway Museum and the eerie York Dungeon. You can read more about these attractions on our York local area page.
