Christmas is a time for families, fun and festive cheer!
This month I thought we could do something for the kids at Darwin’s Book Corner. Here at head office we have chosen three Christmas books to read with the little’uns during this festive time!
We have the amazing, classic and interactive The Jolly Christmas Postman, the hilarious smash-hit The Dinosaur that Pooped Christmas, and then the answer to that all important question What does Santa do on Boxing Day?. All three are wonderful in their own right, and will delight any child reading them. So read on parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, or even if you just love a good festive story, you will be sure to find one that tickles your tinsel toes!
1. The Jolly Christmas Postman
by Janet and Allan Ahlberg
This interactive book is a classic and is a staple in most homes! The Ahlberg’s are a famous children’s book creating team, with Allan writing, and Janet illustrating, they created over 100 best sellers. The Jolly Christmas Postman starts on Christmas Eve, and the Jolly Postman is doing his rounds, he has some very special letters to deliver at this magical time of year. Baby Bear has a very special letter, Red Riding Hood has a lovely game from Mr. Wolf and Humpty Dumpty has a puzzle to play with, along with some other special letters too! He is a very busy postman this year, make sure to pull the letters out of the envelopes as you’re reading, to see what the secrets are! This is some great interactive fun to have with the kids in the run up to Christmas!
2. The Dinosaur that Pooped Christmas
by Tom Fletcher and Dougie Poynter, illustrated by Garry Parsons
I am a huge McFly fan, so when I heard that half of the popular band had written a children’s story, I had to read it! I didn’t even use the normal excuse of ‘it’s for my nephew’, I know, I am shameless. The Dinosaur that Pooped is a series of funny and engaging books, and definitely something for the kids to giggle at! This story starts with Danny, who has a mountain of toys, and wants absolutely everything he can this Christmas, well Santa has had enough, Danny will get a very hungry present this year. A Dinosaur. When Danny’s dinosaur wakes up he is so hungry he eats everything in sight, all of Christmas is gone, including poor old Grandma. But as we all know, what goes in must always come out! There is poop, presents and some prehistoric festive fun in this wonderful Christmas tale! It even has a little message about being too greedy. Laugh along and enjoy in the delight of the kids giggles all throughout this story, a great read!
3. What does Santa do on Boxing Day?
By Becky and Allan Plenderleith
The Plenderleith team have penned some great stories together, and separately. Allan is a professional scriptwriter for Children’s TV, with 20 years experience, including stories for Thomas & Friends, Noddy in Toytown and, my husbands favourite, Horrid Henry! So you know this story is in good company straight away! Have you ever wondered what Santa actually does after Christmas Day? Maybe he puts his feet up? Or sleeps off all those mince pies? Nope! He still has work to do, lots of little animals are rubbing their paws together with glee, and waiting for their Christmas presents to appear under their tree! A toothbrush for the shark, to look after those pearly whites! A fancy dress box for the chameleon, blend in or stand out anywhere! But the big question is, what is Santa going to give Rudolph this year? This funny, heart warming and festive tale follows Santa’s journey all around the world, delivering gifts to all the young animals. A wonderful story for the kids, and even fur-babies, this Christmas, find out what Santa really gets up to after the big day!
Reading is a brilliant way to spend time up to, and around, the Christmas season without being glued to the TV. So curl up on the sofa with some warm milk, and enjoy these lovely, funny, imaginative and jolly treats with little ones. They will laugh and delight at the Christmas tales.
Happy Holidays Ladies & Gents! Have a very merry Christmas and read the holiday away!
