Top 10 Board Games
Nothing beats gathering around the coffee table to play a good board game, family game nights bring out the best in everyone…
Everything is technological these days, I know I sound old but it’s true, when you think ‘games’ now it’s automatically a games console, or an app on a smart phone or tablet. So let’s start the retro revolution and grab a board game! Darwin Escapes’ lodges come with a few family favourite games, and here are my top 10 favourite board games…
My all time favourite game, the aim of the game is to solve the murder. Whether you are Miss Scarlet or Professor Plum, you are suspect! The classic version is fab, but there are themed ones too, explore Hogwarts with Harry Potter or trawl around London with Sherlock Holmes. Move around the board and into the rooms to get the clues, they even made a hilarious film about it in the 80’s called Clue, starring Tim Curry.
This classic game always starts with good intentions, and then an hour later and there are accusations of cheating, stealing money and trading property for cash (this is me, I always run of out cash). Aim of the game is to have the most money at the end and everyone else is bankrupt, this can take a few days so settle in for a long one! There are endless versions, from The Simpsons, Star Wars, Horrible Histories to Llandudno, Conwy and Cardiff, as well as the classic version.
I hadn’t played this before my stay at Cheddar Woods Resort & Spa, and I was pleasantly surprised that it was good fun! Located in the lodge it was a no brainer to play, Mr T Googled the rules and off we went, he won most of the games but I did win one! The aim is to get rid of all your opponents counters before they get yours. An oldy, but a goody!
4. Snakes & Ladders
This game is not just for the kids, its super fun for adults too! Definitely brought out our competitive natures, the aim is to get to the top of the board first, using the ladders and avoiding those pesky snakes. Again this classic is available in some Darwin Escapes’ locations!
5. Tic Tac Toe
Or noughts and crosses to some, again played at Cheddar Woods, but this can be played without the board too. A bit of paper and a pen will be all you need if in a bind! Great fun, I won twice! Old school fun!
6. Tiddly Winks
I’m not going to lie, I am awful at this game, I have no aim at all. The whole point of the game is to get as close to the middle of the board as possible, by flicking your counters with the bigger counter… good fun, and to amp it up you can put a mug or glass in the middle to aim for too.
7. Trivial Pursuit
As a kid I hated this game because I never knew the answers. But nowadays there are so many version, including kid friendly ones, that it is glorious fun! Mr T is awful at this game, could be why I like it so much. The aim of the game is to get all the cheese pieces and get to the middle of the board first, using general knowledge to answer questions. There are many versions of this game, with everything from Harry Potter, Celebrity, The Simpsons and pop culture out there.
I have fond memories of this game while living in Canada with friends, creating the World Championships of Jenga (I never got to the finals). The aim of the game is to take as many little wood pieces without making the Jenga tower topple, this is also hilarious as a drinking game, for those who are old enough. (Please drink responsibly)
When taking into account my job you’d think I’d be good at this game right? Well you’re wrong, apparently I don’t work well under pressure! This classic word game will give you hours of fun, the aim is to get the highest score by creating words with the tiles you are given, a firm family favourite.
10. 221B Baker Street: The Detective Game
You may never have heard of this game, I have only recently come across it and it is now a family favourite at our game nights. Very similar to Cluedo, a crime has happened and you have to find out who, how and why by travelling around the board and gathering clues from each room. This Sherlock themed game is very detailed and has 75 cases to solve, seriously a great investment in your family game night!
Okay so I’ve realised that I am far more competitive than I originally thought, I only really like playing games that I win at and Darwin Escapes’ holiday homes are fully equipped to give you a fantastic family game night to enjoy on your holiday! If you are spending time on a Darwin Escapes break, check through the drawers and see what games you find!
Happy Adventuring Guys and Dolls!
