Welcome to a special edition of Darwin’s Book Corner ladies and gents! Just in time for a very special birthday…
Today (13th September) is Roald Dahl’s 100th Birthday, and here at Darwin Escapes HQ we are celebrating in style, a Roald Dahl birthday party! And because he has sold over 250 million copies worldwide I couldn’t possibly choose only one of his 15 amazing books to review. So instead we are going to have a party and talk about Roald Dahl, play games and have cake!
Grown ups are complicated creatures, full of quirks and secrets
“A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth…but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”
“Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”
So before penning beautiful children’s fiction Roald Dahl was a fighter pilot in the RAF during World War II and after being injured he was then sent to Washington DC as a diplomat and intelligence officer. Once he started writing he quickly became known for unexpected endings, with unsentimental, macabre and often dark humour through the stories, and I think this is why so many loved his books. Children love mischief and magic, something that Dahl had in spades, which he managed to so expertly share with the world, making you truly believe Giants were going to pop their head through your window during the witching hour, or that your next door neighbour really was secretly a witch…
A little nonsense now and then, is cherished by the wisest men
“These books gave Matilda a hopeful message: You are not alone.”
“Never do anything by halves if you want to get away with it. Be outrageous. Go the whole hog…”
“It’s impossible to make your eyes twinkle if you aren’t feeling twinkly yourself.”
Above all Dahl championed kindness in his stories, which all had an underlying warm sentiment to them, like a little cuddle, or someone holding your hand while you were reading. There are 15 Roald Dahl stories, including James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Witches, Fantastic Mr Fox, The BFG and the list goes on…so you see why we couldn’t just pick one to review? But my all time favourite Roald Dahl tale has to be Matilda, I love to read as you know, so as a child Matilda really spoke to me – also he talks about eating a huge chocolate cake, that spoke to me too!
We are the music makers, we are the dreamers of dreams
“Whipped cream isn’t whipped cream at all if it hasn’t been whipped with whips, just like poached eggs isn’t poached eggs unless it’s been stolen in the dead of night.”
“Mr Twit was a twit. He was born a twit. And, now at the age of 60, he was a bigger twit than ever.”
“All the reading she had done had given her a view of life that they had never seen.”
So in honour of Roald Dahl’s 100 Birthday we had an office party celebration, filled with cakes, stories, games and drawings! I downloaded the Gloriumptious Party Park from the fantabulous Roald Dahl website, which had everything I needed. We then coloured in the bunting, played the spendarific word search and crossword puzzles, testing our knowledge of the Dahl universe and coloured to our hearts content! A great day here at DE HQ for one of the world’s best authors, dreamers and magic makers, Roald Dahl was a man who helped children create a world of pure imagination (Gene Wilder was an amazing Willy Wonka)
Here are some images of our own Roald Dahl Celebration…
How many Darwin Ducks did you spot in the Newt?
As you can see we had a blast, why not download your own party park and have a Dahl inspired party of your own? If you are in the Cardiff Bay area around 17th September keep an eye out for some great Roald Dahl celebrations in his home town, or for your imagination fix Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda the Musical are in theatres now, as well as the brand new The BFG movie out in cinemas…plenty to give you that Roald Dahl fix you need!
Happy 100th Birthday Roald Dahl, the dreamer of dreams!
