Myth Busting Spa’s for First Time Users

We thought we do some myth busting and set the record straight…

If you’ve never been to a spa before it can all seem a bit intimidating, but rest assured all those thoughts and things you’re worried about are common myths that we can bust right here at Darwin Escapes!

We’ve found the top 6 myths about spas that we think need busting the most…

Everyone at a Spa is ‘Perfect’

– True. You are perfect, just the way you are (isn’t that a song?)

Using a spa for the first time can be a little daunting, but a good spa will remind you that no matter your age, size, gender or ethnicity, you are already perfect. The experience will enhance and celebrate your natural goodness, with staff going out of their way to make you feel at ease and relaxed. And let’s be honest, everyone is busy concentrating on themselves and their treatments too. A good spa will make you feel relaxed and fabulous!

My therapist will be mortified by…

my wobbly bits / random body hair / scars or lumps

– False. Completely false.

A therapist is neither judgemental, nor squeamish and would not bat an eyelid at any perceived problem area you are worried about. They are there to make you feel amazing, they enjoy their jobs and enjoy helping people feel fabulous, and it really won’t be anything they haven’t seen before. If you are particularly uncomfortable or concerned, talk to the therapist beforehand to calm your nerves.

Only Women go to the Spa

– False

This used to be true, back in the day. However, times have changed with male spa user numbers rising so much that spas now have a range of products and treatments specifically for men. Couples treatments are also becoming more popular, as well as men relaxing in the sauna or booking a massage after going to the gym. There are also more men booking manicures and pedicures, as well as new grooming treatments.

Massages Will Hurt

– Sometimes

There are certain massages that may hurt, some sport massages and the Thai massage are designed to work you muscles and any knots you have, and can be a little ‘rough’. However, all massages will help to relax and sooth your muscles. Your therapist will always check the pressure with you and will look for you feedback.

You’ll Have to get Naked

– False

It is not common for people to be naked at a spa, everyone will be wearing swim suits and robes in the relaxation and wet areas, whether these are bikini’s or full costumes. During certain massages a therapist will ask a woman to untie her bra strap for ease (you can say no), however you will be covered with towels throughout your treatment. You can wear whatever you are comfortable in, but expect no nudity.

Facials Make your Skin Spotty

– False

They not make your skin spotty, before the treatment your therapist will talk to you about your skin type, but will also be experienced enough to know what will help you just by looking at you. They will then choose the best products to use, however if you suffer from breakouts let your therapist know to help them with their judgement.

And those are the top 6 myths that we thought would need busting for all you first time spa users!
