Mirehouse & Gardens in Keswick

Date: 17th July 2017
Author: Sarah Twist
Publisher: Darwin Escapes
Park: Keswick Reach Lodge Retreat
Local Area

Looking for a great family day out? With lots of play areas & stunning gardens, the Mirehouse has something for everyone.

Just down the road from Keswick Reach Lodge Retreat is Mirehouse & Gardens, a beautiful historic house in a stunning setting, Mirehouse is a family home, with unusual literary connections where live piano music flows through the rooms as visitors wander through enjoying the unique paintings, photographs and letters. Visitors to Mirehouse return for many reasons, including the woodland playgrounds, free family nature notes, the tranquil Bee Garden, history quiz and the owl hunt in the house. Others are attracted to Mirehouse by its spectacular setting between mountains and a shimmering lakeshore, its connections with many famous writers and artists and the excellent food on offer at The Old Sawmill Tearoom.

A Historic House with Beautiful Gardens, Relaxing Walks and a Stunning Lakeside area

Built in 1666 for Charles Stanley – the 8th Earl of Derby, the house provided a place of residence for his visits to his estates in the area. Over the decades and centuries the house has been expanded upon, with matching bays constructed in 1790 and part of the house completely rebuilt in 1832. The house has only been sold once, in 1688 to Roger Gregg who was the Earl’s agent and it remains a family home to this day.

Take a Tour Inside the Magnificent Family Home

Take a trip back in time and see the painstakingly preserved and lovingly maintained interior of the house. The hall is both beautiful and of historic significance; a treat for budding interior designers and historians. With stunning antique furniture dating back to the 17th Century and detailed (and slightly haunting!) portraits of previous owners displayed on the walls. The rest of the house is equally impressive with an array of stunning fireplaces, grand furniture and portraits. From the dining room to the library, each area has its own unique style, that you won’t find anywhere else!

Enjoy the Gardens as you Walk, Relax & Rejuvenate

Whilst the house is grand and spectacular, the grounds are tranquil yet inspiring. With lovingly maintained lawns, terraced gardens, a heather maze and even a bee garden. Once overgrown and unkept, in recent decades the gardens have been restored to match the beauty of years gone by. Full of colour and a wide range of plants and wildlife, there is plenty to keep your eye out for – including rare plants such as the asarabacca and views of the Bassenthwaite Lake.

Adventure Play for All the Family

People visit Mirehouse with the whole family –  with mazes to enjoy in the gardens for the children and the playground providing a great place to finish up your visit. With a Forest Course for 6 to 12 year olds, a Steeplechase, a Forest Castle and one of a kind Squirrel Island!

A Breathtakingly Beautiful Estate

The picture says it all really, the house and gardens are set in the most picturesque area of Cumbria. Great for some photography, sight seeing and for creating lasting memories with all the family. The gardens, playgrounds, lakeside walks and tearoom are open 7 days a week from 10am – 5pm. The house is open from 1.30pm – 4.30pm on Saturdays, Sunday & Wednesdays. Dogs are welcome on the grounds – please keep them on a short lead at all times and away from the livestock.
