Anyone who is staying in one of the luxury log cabin style lodges that we have at our stunning Tilford Woods Lodge Retreat will be lucky enough to enjoy easy access to one of the finest eateries in the Farnham area, The Duke of Cambridge, which is located literally right on the doorstep of our Surrey resort. You can simply hop out of your lodge, walk through a gate and you’ll find yourself in the beer garden of this quirky, yet sophisticated gastropub where no expense is spared in the pursuit of excellence. With its large garden area, patios and cosy indoor fire places; The Duke of Cambridge is the perfect location for a drink or bite to eat at any time of the year.
Whilst in the area, we thought we would find out if this famous pub lived up to its excellent reputation…
A recent £500,000 redevelopment helped further improve the Duke of Cambridge, with a children’s play area being added to ensure that all members of the family would be catered for. During this redevelopment, a larger car park was added to help facilitate the unprecedented level of demand there is for their fine selection of food and beverages. When you pay a visit here, you’ll soon understand why. Regardless of whether you are looking for a bite to eat or just a drink, The Duke of Cambridge offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere in which to while away the hours during your next holiday in Surrey.
However, the establishment has never lost the connection to its roots and continues to offer an extensive drinks menu made up of fine wines, craft ales and thirst quenching ciders. It is also well known for its fine collection of in vogue gins and even hosts a ‘Gin Wednesday’ event where you can enjoy a gin and fever-tree mixer for just £5. There are certainly worse ways to spend hump day! Cocktail lovers are also in for a treat, with the highly trained staff able to offer a selection of concoctions to appeal to all tastes.
If you are tee-total, driving or simply prefer a soft drink then you are also well catered for here. The Duke of Cambridge enjoys a relationship with Mozzo Coffee; an environmentally oriented Hampshire based organisation which aims to produce some of the finest black nectar you could wish to sample.
Mozzo Coffee is not the only expert supplier to enjoy a relationship with the Duke, with the pub priding itself on working with only the best Surrey suppliers to source the best possible ingredients to ensure that the food served here is faultless.
Although it was tempting to try a bit of everything on the menu, we limited ourselves whilst dining at the Duke to a chargrilled Sirloin steak and much talked about beef burger off the Summer menu.
The Steak was perfectly cooked and the meat remarkably tender, with the staff highlighting that the meat had been sourced from a nearby farmer. I’m not entirely sure what he had been feeding his cattle, but it certainly did the trick and the meat was absolutely divine. It couldn’t be faulted.
This can be said for all aspects of the meal which was served on a quirky board which was quite in keeping with the rustic décor of the establishment. Although most gastro pubs tend to just chuck a bit of lettuce on the side as garnish, you will find none of this at The Duke of Cambridge which highlights the attention to detail that Head Chef Jay Williams goes to when it comes to dishes. The salad was simply beautiful and would have served as a meal in its own right.
The hamburger was equally as delectable, being served on a fresh brioche bun and with an un-intruding garlic mayonnaise. Again the meat was succulently soft and perfectly cooked; it is easy to understand why the bar and grill menu is proving so popular with diners taking advantage of the beer garden. There really can be no better way to spend a sunny Surrey afternoon than here with a burger in one hand and gin in the other.
Those with a sweet tooth are also sure to leave here feeling satisfied. We sampled the Banana Nougatine Parfait and also the ice cream whilst at the establishment.
The Banana dish was light and creamy; the perfect summer dessert in other words. The ice cream meanwhile was creamy and flavoursome, having been sourced from Meadow Farm cottage. It would have been remiss not to try out a liqueur coffee to finish off the dining experience which met the same high standards which we had now come to expect.
Our idyllic Tilford Woods Lodge Retreat is surrounded by the peaceful Surrey countryside and is the perfect place to escape from everyday life for anyone who is in need of a relaxing break. The log cabin style accommodation has underfloor heating, fire places and outdoor decking areas to ensure that it is ideal at any time of the year.
The lodges are also fully equipped for self-catering, but the close proximity of our resort to The Duke of Cambridge means that you’d be mad to not try out this world class gastropub which draws in foodies from far and wide.
