Darwin Escapes is a very proud sponsor of the Breaking Ground Garden at the RHS 2017 Chelsea Flower Show, in support of the Wellington College. Wellington College was established in 1853, and named in memorial of the Duke of Wellington, building on his honourable legacy of British traditions, values and ambition. The College is now one of the World’s leading co-educational independent schools, with a progressive and compassionate message, showcased at the Chelsea Flower Show.
Darwin Escapes is a proud and passionate supporter of the Wellington College, and its family of schools, and was a sponsor of their 2015 RHS Chelsea Flower Show entry, The Living Legacy Garden, which won a Silver award at the prestigious show. The Living Legacy Garden commemorated the Battle of Waterloo, and the Wellington College itself, and has since been rebuilt in the grounds of the College to be enjoyed by all.
For 2017, the College has encompassed the ambition to break down barriers for life-changing education, inspired by the new bursary campaign at Wellington College. The new bursary allows young people with talent and promise, who wouldn’t normally have access to the private education offered at the College, to attend and flourish, enjoying the opportunities the College offers.
The garden itself highlights the importance of breaking down these barriers and how important it is for these young, talented students to have the opportunity to attend the College, regardless of their financial circumstance.
Darwin Escapes is a passionate supporter of this progressive message, making the wide-range of commitment to raising awareness and funds for the new bursary. As well as our broader support for young talent in the business community, where we play host to a group of work experience students from the Wellington Academy – a part of the Wellington College family.
The garden has encompassed all the above ideas, as well as being inspired by the nature and structure of the human brain’s neural pattern, referencing the synaptic activity throughout the grounds. The plants through the garden pays homage to the unfavourable sandy heathlands, with communities of grasses around and dotted with native Perennials, as well as beautiful mature trees.
A central feature of the garden will be the ‘disappearing walls’, created from thin metal rods, welded together to create structures throughout the garden. These 4 meter high ‘walls’ represent the disappearing walls of private education at the Wellington College, with students attending based on talent and ability rather than financial status.
The human brain is largely made up of water, and following along with the theme of the garden, the reflective deck level pool creates this connection to the rest of the garden. The fragmented paving stones that overhang the pool, shows the patterns of neuron cells connecting in the brain, adding to the overall theme and feel of the garden.
At the rear of the garden is the boundary wall, which is called the message wall, which also features are a graphic interpretation of the synapse, flowing through from the rest of the garden. On the message wall are the thoughts of over 200 Wellington students and their families, in the form of handwritten, personal messages of visions of their future, all set out in an explosive and wave like manner.
