Welcome to an extra special and spooky Darwin’s Book Corner post my ghosts and ghouls!

As it’s Halloween I thought we could talk about some classically spooky tales! It’s nothing too scary as Halloween is also a time for fun and hijinks, but I thought we could travel from childhood spooky, to teen angst creepiness and end with an all out adulthood scarefest via books! So let’s crack on ghosts and ghouls…

Goosebumps Series

goosebumps

These were first released in 1992 and have sold over 350 million copies worldwide, part of the success is that creator R.L. Stine writes spooky stories that are perfect for tweens and teens alike. The series follows children characters through different scary situations, normally involving monsters and other supernatural elements. You may have seen the recent Goosebumps movie starring Jack Black as R.L. Stine, who goes up against his own creations including Slappy the dummy from Night of the Living Dummy. But for me, the scariest story by far is A Nightmare on Clown Street, this story started my clown-phobia! A series that has a great mix of horror and humour, perfect spooky stories for tweens.

Point Horror Series

This series was most popular among teens back in the day, it was first published in the 80’s with various contributing authors (including R.L. Stine), and only stopped publishing in 2014. The stories are probably a little outdated, but still pretty creepy, filled with teen angst and dating blunders with some strong moral messages. Collect Call is a story about a girl who receives a phone call from her deceased friend, with the moral tale of not to drink and drive. But probably the most popular story is Blind Date, where Kerry is excited about his blind date with, what sounds like, a really hot girl. But is she the girl of his dreams, or his nightmares? With decades worth of creepy tales you are sure to find something spooky just right for any teenager.

Stephen King

You can’t mention horror without thinking of the master. Known as the Godfather of Horror, this master author has one of the best imaginations in the world, as well as the world class talent to share his fabulous stories! A best selling author for over 40 years, kind has terrified millions with his creepy tales, including teen scare-queen Carrie, the incredibly spooky The Shining, the epic tale of The Stand and the memorable scarefest IT. If you’re afraid of it, King has written about it, and if you aren’t afraid of it, you will be after reading his books. I don’t think I picked my phone up for a week after reading CELL! If you haven’t read a Stephen King book before then it’s best to start with Carrie, it will ease you into the weird and scary world of the King novels.

And there you have a choice of spooky stories for all ages to enjoy this Halloween! Now tell me, what’s your favourite scary story? (see what I did there?)
