Today is buttercream and sprinkles heaven here at Darwin HQ, we all know how I feel about cakes, and when it’s for an amazing cause like raising funds for Alzheimer’s, it’s even better!

The Alzheimer’s Society does everything they possibly can to be a supporting force for the hundreds of thousands of people affected by dementia each year. They also help fund vital research to help improve current treatments and move ever closer to a cure in the future. The word dementia describes a set of symptoms (including memory loss or difficulty thinking) that can be caused when the brain is damaged by things like a series of strokes or diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Currently 850,000 people live with dementia in the UK, and it is set to increase to over 2 million by 2052.

The Alzheimer’s Society CupCake Day helps to raise funds for this important cause, so whether you baked or bought, you’ve made a difference! Raising just £40 will pay for a person living with dementia to attend a Dementia Café for two months, the cafés are a safe and friendly place for a people to share stories and advice with people who truly understand what they are going through.

The CupCake Day is one of the best ways to raise money for an incredible cause, check out our cupcakes below (they were as tasty as they look!)

Alzheimer’s is a progressive illness, which means it gradually gets worse making it hard to pinpoint when it arises, and contrary to common belief it is not a natural part of ageing, it occurs when the brain is damaged or affected by disease. Older people are affected more due to external illnesses increasing the risk factor of developing symptoms, currently one in 14 people over 65 and one in 6 over 80 are affected by dementia.

If you, or someone you know, are struggling with memory loss, confusion or recognition of people, please contact your doctor, or ring the Alzheimer’s Society on 0300 222 11 22, or for more information, and to donate, check out their website!

Happy Alzheimer’s CupCake Day!
