With lots of talk around Mental Health Awareness Week, in this edition of The Health Cocktail we thought we could talk about understating what mental health actually is…

Okay so a few people might be wondering what mental health is and what Mental Health Awareness Week (check out this post for more details) is all about? That’s what this post is about, I’m here to help you (along with the experts over at the Mental Health Foundation) understand that mental health is for everyone, not just people who struggle.

Mental Health for Everyone

keep in touch

So let’s start with that, we all have mental health, everyone of us (including you, me and even Superman) and it is just as important as your physical health, they actually often go hand in hand. It’s important to understand that being mentally healthy doesn’t mean you have a mental problem, it means that you can cope with unexpected life events, have full participations in your relationships and make the most of your potential with no problems, kudos to you! This is a very good thing, but it is also important to understand your mental health, so should anything happen that you struggle to cope with, you know how to help yourself.

Learning About Mental Health

brain health

Mental health is everyone’s business, we all have those times where we feel upset, down or nervous about something and most of the time those feelings pass. But everyone is different, some people can bounce back, others can struggle to do this which can then cause problems down the line. Whether you are finding a situation in work particularly stressful and are unable to switch off, or you struggle to with social anxiety, you might be able to bounce back and handle the situation or you may struggle to find the bright side and move on. This is what your mental health is about, and being aware of these shifts, as your mental health can change depending your circumstances, age or life events surrounding you it is important to know that it is normal to struggle.

Time to Talk

time to talk

There is a stigma attached to mental health issues in society, but Mental Health Awareness Week, along with many more awareness events, are helping to stop the stigma and start people debating, discussing and even researching into it. Because of this new positive mentally towards mental health more and more people are being open and honest about their struggles, this helps everyone become aware on how to help improve and maintain a positive mental health. Sharing tips on coping strategies is paramount in the community for all walks of life, from gardening, DIY and decorating tips to healthy living and fitness tips, so mental health tips should be no different. Something that works for you can work for someone else, and then you’ve gone and helped someone you grand guru!

Mental health is important to everyone of us, and talking about it is even more so to help us understand it even better. The brain is a powerful tool that we don’t use often enough (some less so than others…) but talking about it’s effects will help us increase our knowledge, and (say it with me…) knowledge is power!
