It’s nearly time for my favourite party of the year, Eurovision! Get ready for the annual cheese-fest with our top tips for ensuring you have the best Eurovision party ever!

Okay so yes, Eurovision is cheesy, very stereotypical, a strobe lighting extravaganza and always involves countless costume changes and men singing their hearts out on one knee. But that is what we love about it, it’s the time of year we can watch in the sure knowledge that we won’t win, so we sit back and enjoy the ride (although Joe and Jake are looking good this year!). And if you didn’t know before Conchita Wurst was 2014’s fabulous Eurovision winner, and has become a big celebrity since!

Eurovision has been going for 60 years and every year it draws in 180 million viewers worldwide so it is clearly doing something right! The last time the UK won was in 1997, with the Katrina and the Waves hit ‘Love Shine a Light’ (its okay I don’t remember it either), so like the world cup we watch every year in the hope that this is the year we can win! Eurovision 2016 takes place in Stolkholm, and this year Australia is in it too after the trail last year (go figure!) but lets be honest, the Aussie’s know how to party!

So hear are our top tips for the best Eurovision party ever…

Fancy Dress

fancy dress

Make it a fancy dress affair; people will be so much more relaxed if everyone looks a fool! Set the tone and give everyone a country to come dressed as, either traditional dress or they can look up the most successful act from that nation and dress like them!

Photo Booth Props

phoybooth

Buy a set of photo booth props; you can get them super cheap from budget stores and various websites. They are great fun and you can get comedy ones, as well as international ones to help theme your event.

Decorate

flags

It’s all about the little things, make sure to get bunting, internationally themed costume jewellery, cool paper horns, mini flags to fly for you country, musical instrument inflatables, as well as posters and even fun international themed centre pieces for you table/coffee table. Also don’t forget to add lots of pillows and duvets, the programme starts at 8pm and goes on until 11:45pm – you may get some sleepy heads in your group!

Drinks

alcohol

Always drink responsibly; at with the length of the programme it is very important to pace yourself! Set up some drinking games, a great one is every time there is a costume change, strobe light or when someone goes down on one knee during the performance you have to drink! Not into alcohol? Don’t worry me either, I plan on have a traditional drink from each country, tea, juice, that kind of thing, the game still applies!

Food

food

Include European foods on your menu for the night, typical foods found in the competing countries – if like me, you can’t actually cook, just get those tiny fancy flags and bake some cakes to put them in, problem solved!

Gamble (Responsibly)

gamble

Download the sweep stake sheet from the website/app and then draw names for what country everyone will have. Then either all put £1 in for the total prize, or bake a cake, buy a case of beer or a new candle (I love candles…) and that can be the winner’s prize. People care more when there is something to win, forcing those nay-sayers into yay-sayers! (That made me chuckle..)

Cheer for Nicky Byrne, yup that guy from Westlife, who will be representing Ireland (I’m pretty sure he did the results last year?) and cheer on our boys Joe & Jake for the UK, with their song ‘You’re Not Alone’. The app give loads of information, profiles on the performers, being able to vote, lots of games and (clearly) much needed news!

So settle down with hosts Mans and Petra, and watch Europe’s favourite TV show (I can hear you scoffing…)

Happy Eurovision Day!
