I don’t know about you but when I used to think about yoga, it would conjure up images of well toned women in flowing white trousers and a bright tank top, on the beach, looking very serene. I can honestly say this is not what I looked like at all, I was huffing and puffing trying to touch my toes! But it was good fun and satisfying when you mastered a pose, it works for all ages and abilities, the perfect kind of exercise and strengthening.

History

Yoga pose 4

Yoga originated in India over 5000 years ago, and has been adapted in various ways and is now common place all around the world, with even the NHS having a fantastic page dedicated to the benefits of it. As an exercise is mainly focuses on core strength, flexibility and breathing, which can then boost mental and physical well being, including posture and breathing. There are a whole host of different styles of yoga, for example Ashtanga, Lyengar and Sivananda, and some concentrate on different areas and difficulty. The key with yoga is to choose a class that fits your fitness and ability level, the best tip is the longer the class, the more time you will have to learn breathing and relaxation techniques, and the teacher will have more time to work individually with you on your ability.

My Yoga Experience

Yoga pose 1

I have only recently tried Yoga via an app on my phone, this isn’t always recommended as it is hard to then find the correct position or breathing. But I wanted to give it a go and I don’t always have free time to find a class. It was still really good fun, and the dogs loved that mummy was rolling around on the floor with them! I would definitely recommend the app, it’s free and there are loads of classes to choose from and it caters to all ages and abilities, from newbie to experienced, it talks you through the whole session so you always know where you are. And it’s accompanied by a video so you can see how you are supposed to look during the poses (although I didn’t always look like them…), it’s a good way to grasp an idea of what yoga is.

Why not give it a go?

Classes are the best way to really learn how to practice yoga successfully; learning how to breathe properly and the correct posture with the help of a trained professional is always the best way forward. Darwin Escapes offer classes at our very own Swanage Bay View, being surrounded by the breath taking views of the Jurassic Coast to help you relax.

If you wanted a little taster of what its all about, below is a 20 minute tutorial video for beginners from Yoga Vidya, an online yoga community. This is a great introduction to get an idea of what it’s all about…

As always any comments or suggestions on what you use to help you are always welcome!

So you lovely Darwinites, let’s look forward to the next cocktail! And always remember, take a breath, keeping moving forward and always be kind to yourself.
