I’m glad you like our last instalments enough to keep coming back! And today is a great awareness day for mindfulness and mental health, it is time to talk day! Time to talk is a Time To Change Charity national mental health awareness day, its aim is to help end the misconceptions and stigma that surrounds talking about mental health.
Now, mental health as a topic has a massive range, with everything from something like schizophrenia and psychosis to depression and anxiety. They all have serious health implications that can effect everyday lives, but there is a stigma attached to them, whether that is people thinking you can’t function if you have schizophrenia, when you can, and people thinking that you can just pull yourself out of depression or anxiety, which is not always possible. For someone who suffers from anxiety, speaking from experience, hearing the words ‘you’re just nervous, stop thinking about it’ and then not being able to talk about it, are damaging. We might know they come from a good place, as is often the case, but more often than not, it doesn’t help, and can damage someone’s confidence in speaking out about any problems, whether perceived to be large or small. Not everyone with a mental health problem ends up like Heath Ledger’s Joker from The Dark Knight, could you imagine a world Jokers?! It wouldn’t be boring though, right?
Mindfulness can help with many mental health problems, as we found in our last post, it is even used to help Cancer patients deal with the extraordinary pain they are in. It is a fantastic coping tool, it teaches us how to slow down, meditate and live in the moment, recognise that our thoughts are not actions, they will not always come true. When our thoughts and feelings can feel far too overwhelming, mindfulness techniques can pull us back to the moment and cope with those anxious feelings a little better.
So as part of the #timetotalk day, the Health Cocktail would like to open the floor to the lovely, beautiful on the inside and out, Sarah Holmes. She is truly a wonderful person, very insightful and helpful to anyone that crosses her path.
Here is a little of Sarah’s story of Mindfulness…
