Resident blogger Sarah T has asked me to do a guest blog on mindfulness because it’s ‘my thing’ and though I’ve been practicing for over a year now, I’m still doing just that: practicing. I’m no expert and though I’m not saying it doesn’t work short term, the true and long term benefits can be reaped by daily practise. It’s not made me all floaty, serene and hippy-like, but it does help me deal with daily life and a head full of thoughts ranging from ‘Did I lock the front door?’ to ‘I’ll never make that deadline.’ Mindfulness helps bring my thoughts back to now, and if you sit quiet for a moment and focus on now, you realise that your thoughts are just that – thoughts, and right now, you’re OK. (Disclaimer – it doesn’t work every time, but I promise it helps!)
If Sarah will have me back, I have a few more stories, but I’ll share my first experience of mindfulness with you today. Let me take you back 10 years ago, before I’d ever heard the word ‘mindfulness’; I was in New York (Oooh la de da!) and it was my first ever journey out of the UK. Determined to ‘capture’ the moments to savour forever and show everyone how great a time I had (come on, we’re all guilty of that on social media every now and then!), I clicked away on my camera constantly. Day 2 took me on a helicopter ride around the Statue of Liberty (well, you’re only there once!) and I must have taken 50 snaps from the air. The next day we headed to the top of the Empire State Building, and there I was clickclickclicking away when suddenly I thought of one of my favourite TV shows set in New York: Friends. Not a main character, but guest star Alec Baldwin’s character Parker is ridiculed for taking ‘mental pictures’ and noting special moments in life. When in Rome and all that… I decided to do just that (without the actions or flamboyant American excitability) and attempted to truly experience the time up there, rather than almost proving I’d been there and missing everything.
So, what have we learnt?
Guess what, 10 years later, I have no idea where my pictures from New York are (that’s not my picture above!) and I even second guessed myself as to whether I’ve ever been in a helicopter when someone recently asked, but have I ever been up the Empire State Building? Yes, and it was incredible.
The moral of the story – capturing memories on film is fantastic – but you can’t beat creating memories and enjoying the moment.
