Somerset christmas markets 2015

November 13, 2015

Christmas in Somerset is filled with festive events to cheer even the biggest Scrooge up!

Cheddar Woods Resort & Spa is Hoseasons’ Best in Britain 2014 winner and rightly so with our on-park facilities are second to none. With our Go Active+ Programme offering a huge amount of activities, including archery, crossbow and fencing, along with our bowling alleys, pool table and golf simulator, there is always something to do. Being surrounded by the stunning Somerset woodland means you can take a long stroll and lose yourself in the majestic scenery – please don’t actually get lost, that would be very bad! During the winter months the woodland turns into a Narnia type place, it is absolutely magical around Christmas. The local area also goes all out for Christmas and is something like an old-timey movie in the ancient town of Axbridge, or a modern twist in the centre of Bristol.

Bristol German Christmas Markets

The City of Bristol turns into a magical German wonderland for the season, the Christmas markets are taken from the style of the Berlin or Munich’s Christmas markets. With 38 traditional chalets all decorated in festive greenery and fairy lights to set the mood, as well as this year being centre stage is the nativity pyramid, a stunning sculpture with each level holding a different nativity scene. The streets will be filled with the sound of Bavarian-style music from entertainer Der Alpen Klaus, who has played in such places as the Munich Beer Festival and will be playing some favourite festive tunes. The chalets will be filled with all sorts of different goodies, including traditional German Christmas decorations, lights, wooden toys, lamps and amber jewellery. As well as handmade glass gifts, porcelain angels, candles, clothing and charming miniature houses to create your own Christmas scene in; you will find something for everyone in these colourfully lit stalls. There will also be plenty of festive food and drink on offer, from waffles, liquorice, stollen cake, gingerbread hearts, candied fruit and, of course, mulled wine. These markets are sure to get you in the Christmas spirit!

Axbridge Christmas Market

Axbridge town is a quaint village that is steeped in history, the whole town is stunning and looks like something out of Hot Fuzz or The Vicar of Dibly, it is possibly my favourite place I have ever been to. The town takes Christmas to whole new level and turns the 400 year old square into the lovely Christmas Markets for one day only, the many stalls will have been selling locally sourced meat, famous Cheddar cheese and strawberries, classic pies and even sample some delicious hot lamb rolls made fresh. There will also be handmade gifts and crafts on offer to find that lovely personal gift for someone, you can meet Santa, himself and if you are under 9 years old he will even give you a lovely gift! Stay until the end and delight in the delicious hog roast and grab a glass of mulled wine to warm the cockles. It is sure to be a magical day spent in the historic village square.
